Russian Severstal launches new blast furnace’s hot test

30/12/2020

Severstal, a prominent Russian steelmaking group, announced that its Cherepovets steel plant had started a hot test of the No. 3 blast furnace.

The new plant’s capacity is approximately 3 million tons of pig iron per year, bringing Severstal’s total pig iron production capacity to 12.2 million tons.

Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal, stated that the Cherepovets Steel Plant’s blast furnace is the largest investment project in the past ten years, with a total investment of more than 24 billion rubles.

Under the current bumpy market, Severstal relied on self-produced raw materials. Adding the advanced engineering technology used on the No.3 blast furnace will enable various raw materials to be charged into the furnace, thereby bringing more flexibility. Ultimately, it will help strengthen the company’s cost leadership in liquid steel while enhancing overall competitiveness
